What is Personal Safety (PS)?

Personal Safety is a course designed to combine elements of our Conflict Management and Resolution training (CMR) and our Physical Intervention training (PI).

The course looks at the skills involved in pre-empting, managing and resolving conflict situations as they occur in the workplace as well as providing candidates with some low-impact personal safety techniques which can be employed when conflict management skills are ineffective and aggression or violence ensues. Our break-away and disengagement techniques are specifically designed to be low-impact and do not require the use of force or strength to succeed.

For more details please see Personal Safety Training (PS)

Who should attend this course?

Our Personal Safety course is tailored specifically for each individual client and is based on the specific needs of those attending. The course is designed for anyone working in an environment where they have direct contact with the public or sections of the community where conflict arises. This course is particularly useful for employees who work alone and may not face aggression or violence on a regular basis, but where the risk of workplace violence is present.

Personal Safety is a very compact course designed to give an insight into the subjects and not suitable for professionals who deal with regular aggression and violence in the course of their duties. These individuals should consider a separate Conflict Management and Resolution course (CMR) and Physical Interventions course (PI).

What does the course cover?

Basic elements of effective communication • Blocks to communication • Winning trust • Win – Wins and 'Gifts' • Signalling Non-aggression • Open palms • Eye contact • Active listening • Determining space and distance • Stance • Dynamic risk assessment • Evaluating risk (P.O.P.S. model) • Positive Response (S.A.F.E.R. model) • Human Behaviour & Responses • Emotional vs. rational brain • Fight or flight • The human behaviour cycle • Body language • The human display process • Defusing High Risk Conflict • Signs of escalation • Triggers & inhibitors • Stimulus response • Empathy • Contact & cover – working as a team • Review of health & safety law • Review of criminal law • Review of common law • Law in relation to the use of force • Physical Intervention Techniques - Warm-up • Balance • Blocks • Break-away & Disengagement techniques • Combination techniques

Additional information

To complement our professional training, we provide candidates attending our courses with a selection of comprehensive course hand-outs. These come together to form a training folder candidates can refer back to, in order to refresh their skills and knowledge.

The course examines the causes of aggression and violence so you can work towards preventing conflict in the first place. The low-impact physical break-away techniques are easy to learn, easy to master, easy to remember and easy to implement in real life situations away from the classroom. Our personal safety techniques are designed not to aggravate an aggressor further; the desired outcome is to create space allowing candidates to use their conflict management skills to resolve the situation or to get help.

Many employers shy away from Personal Safety courses which involve any kind of physical intervention aspect as they see it as a step too far and the risks involved to their business are misunderstood. This often puts their business at more risk as untrained employees can pose liability issues to their employers. For more details and analysis, as well as expert opinion please visit our 'Physical Intervention – The Risks' page.

We also provide candidates who hold a valid Beyond The Blue Personal Safety Course Certificate with the protection of an expert witness should they be prosecuted for the correct legal use of one of our techniques, in the course of their duties. For more details on this provision please download our 'Physical Intervention - Protection Against Prosecution' (pdf) document, call us on 0845 602 55 95 or Contact Us for more details.
