Conflict Management

Introduction

Some environments are unfortunately not entirely safe to work in and employees face conflict, aggression and Violence in the Workplace. In the year 2004-05 alone some 849,000 (Source: Health & Safety Executive) assaults occurred in the workplace in England & Wales.

The occurrence of workplace violence in high-risk working environments, including professions such as health and social welfare associate professionals, nurses, medical and dental practitioners were even higher with 5% of employees having experienced violence while in the workplace.

More than two-thirds of workers who had some contact with the public in 2002/3 received neither formal training nor informal advice on violence or threatening behaviour.

16% of all workers in contact with members of the public were 'very' or 'fairly' worried about being assaulted at work. 19% were 'very' or 'fairly' worried about being threatened. Concern was higher in certain occupations: for example, 36% of health and welfare professionals were 'very' or 'fairly' worried.

At Beyond The Blue we believe that employers have a duty of care to their employees and employees have a duty of care to their colleagues and customers. This is especially true in work environments where violence is more likely to occur and where public interaction is an integral part of the service provided. Both employers and employees have a duty to act responsibly and moderately to minimise the risks.

We provide training in Conflict Management and Resolution (CMR). Uniquely we specialise in a low-impact, intelligence led approach to conflict management and conflict resolution. Our approach is to train individuals how to understand the reasons why conflict occurs and therefore how to act proactively prevent it. The concept of understanding what is 'Beyond The Blue' rather then dealing with issues as they occur 'out of the blue' is the underlying principle of our company.

Our courses teach candidates how to recognise conflict, manage it and resolve it before it reaches the aggressive or violent stage.

We also recognise that sometimes conflict management skills alone will not be effective in resolving conflict situations. When you find yourself in a situation where aggressive and violent behaviour is already occurring our Physical Intervention Training (PI) provide effective disengagement, break-away and personal safety techniques allowing candidates to remove themselves from danger and seek assistance.

The nature of these physical intervention techniques is low-impact; we do not provide training in pre-emptive strikes or pain-compliant techniques, as we don’t believe that there is a place for these techniques in the workplace. We want people to learn how to distance themselves from an aggressor, remove themselves from situations and enable them to seek assistance, without the need to rely on strength or force.

Our techniques are easy to learn, easy to master, easy to remember and most importantly easy to implement in real life situations away from the classroom. But we always strongly recommend that candidates complete a Conflict Management and Resolution course (CMR) prior to taking a Physical Interventions course (PI).

We have made a sample learning programmes available to demonstrate how we put our different courses together for individual clients following a Training Needs Analysis (pdf document):
