Licensed Retail Sector

Introduction

The licensed retail sector includes any premises where alcohol is sold under license, including:

• Pubs • Bars • Night Clubs • Private Members Clubs • Social Clubs • Licensed Café’s • Hotels • Leisure Centres • Events • Restaurants • Off-Licenses • Licensed Shops • Supermarkets •

Although the Licensing Act 2003 covers all these premises, conditions on individual licences vary from outlet to outlet depending on a number of local factors; but all are covered by the fundamentals of the act. At the heart of the act are the four key licensing objectives, these form the basis of every individuals responsibilities, if they are in any way involved in the sale or supply of alcohol.

The Licensing Objectives are:

  • The Protection of Children form Harm
  • The Prevention of Crime and Disorder
  • Public Safety
  • The Prevention of Public Nuisance

Alcohol retailers have a duty to Retail Alcohol Responsibly within both the local guidance issued by the local licensing authorities and the national guidance issued by the Department for Media Culture and Sport.

The most effective way to promote the licensing objectives is to train employees and provide them with the knowledge to act professionally. We provide all levels of staff development from front-line serving staff to senior management.

Proactive training not only allows alcohol retailers to meet their statutory requirements it provides a motivated and effective workforce which delivers success to the business.

Every premises licensed to sell alcohol must have a Designated Premises Supervisor who holds a personal licence. In order to adequately protect your business continuity, we strongly recommend that most types of licensed premises have at least two personal licence holders. For an honest assessment of how many personal licence holders your business should have and who should hold a personal licence, call us on 0845 602 55 95 or Contact Us. The number of personal licence holders required will vary from one premises to another depending on the nature of your business. Our assessment is based on our extensive experience, our work with various licensing authorities and legal guidance

To be eligible for a personal licence, individuals must have obtained their National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH). Visit our Course Dates page for our next available NCPLH course; call us on 0845 602 55 95 or Contact Us to book it today.

Training protects your business from prosecution; if an employee fails to meet their responsibilities under the Licensing Act 2003, effective training such as the Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (ARAR) can provide a due diligence defence against prosecution.

Our portfolio of courses allows individuals within the licensed retail sector to achieve nationally recognised qualifications; well trained employees are the key to the success of any business. Even over a 6 month period, a well trained employee can easily pay for their training through their added productivity.

We believe in the mantra that;

“There is only one thing worse than training someone and having them leave.

That is not training someone and having them stay”
