The ADPS course can be delivered either at the client’s own workplace or at a training facility we will provide close by.

In-house Award for Designated Premises Supervisors courses are run at the convenience of our clients; including weekends where required.

Distance Learning Award for Designated Premises Supervisors / ADPS

Because regular open Award for Designated Premises Supervisors courses may not always be scheduled, we have made a distance learning option available.

The distance learning option requires learners to perform ‘open learning’ and then attend one of our training centres in order to complete the examination. ‘Open learning’ means learning at your own pace from the ADPS handbook and CD-ROM, which are sent out once a booking has been completed.

ADPS Distance Learning Exam Dates - Regular ADPS exam dates are scheduled for the Award for Designated Premises Supervisors distance learning option.

Award for Designated Premises Supervisors distance learning examinations take place at 16.00 on the chosen date.

What is the BIIAB Level 2 Award for Designated Premises Supervisors / ADPS course?

The BIIAB Level 2 Award for Designated Premises Supervisors / ADPS is a qualification designed for anyone wishing to assume the position of Designated Premises Supervisor on licensed premises.

A Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) must be appointed on any licensed premises where alcohol is served. The DPS is responsible for the ‘day-to-day running of the premises’ and is prescribed as the ‘single point of accountability’.

The ADPS course is designed to provide learners with the skills and knowledge to carry out their responsibilities as a DPS in a professional manner and uphold the objectives outlined in the Licensing Act 2003.

The Designated Premises Supervisor role makes the person assuming the position responsible and legally accountable for the activities taking place on that premises. This means that the DPS will often be liable for penalties or large fines for non-compliance or unauthorised licensable activities.

There is no requirement in the Licensing Act which determines that a DPS should be present at the licensed premises for any specified period. However we have noticed an increasing number of licensing authorities who look unfavourably or who will not accept someone who is not intimately involved with the running of the licensed premises, assuming the position of DPS.

What does the Award for Designated Premises Supervisors cover?

Roles and responsibilities of the designated premises supervisor Licensable activities Crime and disorder Public nuisance Public safety Protection of children from harm Relevant legislation Risk assessment Compliance

Who should obtain the Award for Designated Premises Supervisors?

The qualification is designed for learners who are:

  • Already a Designated Premises Supervisor at their premises
  • Planning to assume the position of DPS on licensed premises in the future.
  • Supervisors / managers working in the on-trade (pubs, bars, nightclubs, hotels, restaurants etc.) and in the off-trade (off-licenses, supermarkets, etc.)
  • Starting a new business in the licensed retail sector

A Designated Premises Supervisor must hold a Personal Licence; the ADPS qualification does not entitle the holder to apply for a personal licence. Applicant for a personal licence must hold the Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH) qualification. For this reason we always recommend learners should attend the APLH course prior to the ADPS course.

How is the Award for Designated Premises Supervisors assessed?

The ADPS is assessed via a short 30 minute, 30 question multiple-choice exam; learners must achieve 24/30 in their ADPS exam in order to pass and to be awarded their certificate.

Once completed, ADPS exam papers are returned to the BIIAB to be marked. We aim to inform learners of their results within 48 hours of their examination.

Who accredits the Award for Designated Premises Supervisors?

The ADPS is accredited by the BIIAB; on successfully passing the associated examination, learners will receive a certificate from the BIIAB.

Beyond the Blue Training & Consultancy is a ‘Grade 1 BIIAB Centre’ approved to administer BIIAB training and examinations.

The ADPS qualification is endorsed by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and recognised by licensing authorities across England & Wales. It is accredited by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) as a level 2 qualification. Level 2 means it is a qualification which supports employment progression.

What is the difference between the National Certificate for Designated Premises Supervisors / NCDPS and the Award for Designated Premises Supervisors / ADPS?

The ADPS replaces the NCDPS course from January 2011.

This is due to the current transition from the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) to the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The NQF will cease to exist from the 31st December 2010.

The content of the ADPS qualification is the same as the now defunct NCDPS qualification; any NCDPS qualification achieved before 31st December 2010 remains valid.
